Love how beautiful you can make curse words!
OK - that type does say fuck off - but we kind of like it -

Apple Website
Its simple, beautiful and completely image orientated, which is prefect for the function of the site…to sell their products.
The site strikes the balance of simplicity, white space and strong bold type which compliments the high colour imagery. More than anything, the site is enjoyable to look around, the products look beautiful and the delivery of each product is easy to understand and above all, appealing.
The colour scheme of white and grey makes the coloured imagery stand out even more and makes the site appear clean, safe and user friendly. Almost implying a reliability, which, if your deciding to buy a £2000 Mac, is quite a reassuring thing.
The navigation around the site is pretty simple, with each page running consistently with the themes and each one pretty much self-explanatory. I like the initial layout with the buttons at the top of the page and the image underneath, this then directs you to the different areas of the site and other mini-sites (e.g the Store). Once you are into the ‘Mac’ site, underneath the top button bar is a collection of other buttons, this time using imagery and a description of the image to lead you to other pages. Even though these too are buttons, it doesn’t look too much and makes it even simpler to get to where you are trying to find within the site. I also love the way that when the page opens, they ‘bounce’ into view. Lovely little touch.
Oast House Website
As well as being just beautifully branded, the website for the upmarket pub in Spinningfields is equally as beautiful. The logo, which is hand drawn type is perfectly complimentary to the way that the place operates, along with hand-drawn imagery that fits i nicely with the theme.
The colour scheme used adds to the rustic feel of the place and gives you the impression of quite an old English public house. Its extremely rustic and and quite ‘old-worldly’ with chicken being served in wooden boxes and aperitifs served on wooden boards. Its quite an up-market public house, with quite pricey foods and so i think the website needs to reflect this.
Its a very simply designed site and easy to navigate around, with only a few pages on offer. These, however are the only pages you would need when searching for information about the place. On sites such as ‘Slug and Lettuce’, they are quite overly complicated and have a lot of options, pages and imagery, which sometimes makes it quite confusing to find what it is you are actually looking for.
The imagery of the food in the gallery is just beautiful. The ‘Newsreel’ takes you to an alternative site of which the pub is a chain of. This is a completely different site with an entirely different feel. The individual sites for each place enable the company to give individual ‘feels’ to them and allow them to create their own theme.
Its a beautiful site with a complementary website, really makes me want to go! (maybe once the job front is sorted!)
My next big project is creating my own website. I have been researching into tutorials and websites that i admire to gain inspiration for the layout and design of my own. I would like to make just a simple site using my own branding based on my previous business cards.
Helena and Brett are going to show me what thy have learnt in their previous WEB sessions, as i chose the Motion path. This way i have gained experience on both sides of the spectrum and can generate new skills thanks to the other students skills…
Let the web-building begin…
On my PINTEREST, i have a tonne of Helvetica based posters pinned to one of my inspiration boards. Most of which praise the use and flexibility of the font. This one however says it all in a way. Helvetica is over used in the eyes of some designers. I, however am a fan of the typeface, especially the Neue family. But this really caught my eye and slightly made me giggle at the irony of it and the opposite view of so many of the ones i have posted.
(THIS IS NOT A TYPO)
This would have been quite a good idea for our NMP. Our posters are KIND OF interactive in the way that we use clear type to engage the audience to look closer at the individual designs. These are another way of getting the audience to interact with the posters and encourage them to touch it as opposed to just looking.

Playing with the theme “Every image has a sound”, the Brazilian agency created interactive ads using different materials to simulate the sounds of objects pictured in their campaign posters.

Really like the simplicity of this stationary set. The typeface is subtle yet quite bold at the same time. Very elegant but with a professional touch. I think les is definitely more when it comes to stationary such as this. Even the logo ‘CF’ works on its own in a sophisticated way.
Plus, what a lovely name!!!

Final Logo Idea
After going to the meeting about the final show logo today, we narrowed it down to 5 logos, one of which was mine. I slightly tweaked the text to make sure all the letters lined up accurately and sent this one through as my final one.
The logo is created in black to start with but think it will work very well once a colour scheme is chosen, even using different colours for the ‘SSSHOW’ and the text underneath. I much prefer the angle of this one as opposed to the previous experimentations and think it gives it a different sort of depth.
Also the fact that both typefaces are from the same family will make it quite easily applicable when creating typographic posters etc and gives the opportunity to introduce a secondary typeface if needed.
SSSHOW - More Experimentation
I have moved on from the past designs and decided to change typeface to a not so bold but still authoritative serif font. I prefer these ones as the ‘SHOW’ reads slightly better and the different angles give the logo an interesting look. I am still going along the theme of highlighting the ‘shhh’ here but making the ‘SHOW’ more readable.
Also trying the logo at different angles here.
SSSHOW - Secret Salford Show
I have been trying to experiment with the new name for the end of year show and create a logo. The emphasis i am trying to make in these experiments are on the SHHH bit, implying its a secret and highlighting the ‘secrecy’ of the entire show.
I have been experimenting with ‘cutting’ the words so that the ‘shhh’ takes centre stage but the ‘ow’ still links with it to read ‘show’. These are a few of the different layouts i have come up with so far.
I have used a bold, brash font for the ‘SSSHOW as if a stamp of authority and to highlight the importance of the secret show. i think we should be making it a bold statement.
‘Award For Art & Design 2007’
OH MY GOOD LORD….read this for a giggle…
My advice is certainly not to be recommended! So young and daft…hope I’ve grown somehow since these ridiculous comments. Bare in mind i was most probably intoxicated at the time of the unscheduled telephone interview from the Isle of Man Newspapers so don’t hold it against me.
Got a trophy however, so pretty ‘chuffed’ with that!
Love these cut-out text party invitations. The different uses of colour behind the tect make quite a simple layout look a million ties more interesting. I like the idea of a cut out to add colour and THEN to use the coloured cut out as a logo (as seen above). Really interesting idea and lovely typographic invitations.

Sembrot Photography
Direction and design of photographer Chris Sembrot’s promotional material. Letterpressed kraft paper business cards, yellow letterhead, and a 18” x 24” inch poster and a one-color zine which were all created to get across Chris’ attitude towards making and aesthetic. A yellow paperclip was included to keep the components together in the mailer, and 3 different stamps were made for other uses.
I have to admit, i’m a sucker for yellow and black designs. I think it just looks so slick and almost anything you do with these colours (within reason) tends to look pretty amazing. Anyway, i love these business card and letterhead set and really think the company have successfully communicated the [articular photographers attitude and personal style. The plain(ness) of the business card verses the busy imagery and text really compliments each other.
Hacienda’s 30th Birthday Celebrations - FAC51
I got this email through the other day. Not only do i tend to love the designs of the poster imagery and typography for Fac 51’s advertising but i think the way they have made this email is even more interesting. Of course this isn’t a poster design, its designed for a scrolling email, which is clever when considering the audience. The limited use of colour in this particular one makes it look quite grungy and retro, which is very relevant to the decades in which the club will be celebrating. Also the geometric shapes and complementing colours just really make the imagery simple yet entiing.
Its held at the Hacienda Apartments basement car park…I WANT TO GO!!!
Inspiration throughout my ProCon3 and NMP
Here is a link to my Pinterest that includes a lot of my inspirations throughout this last Final Major Project.
This not only complies a lot of imagery for my NMP but also a lot of general inspirations to use throughout my design career. I think this is almost the perfect way to ‘pin’ something you can later refer to for inspiration but also makes a great compilation of really fantastic work that you may otherwise forget about whilst searching around the internet.
The use of ‘Pinterest’ has proved pretty invaluable the last few months as i am often subject to forgetting where i saw things and artists i have discovered. This is a good way to keep a log of all the great pieces of work, or artists and other applicable inspiring pieces to later refer to. This has helped my ProCon a lot!!!!
